The short answer
For most large Monmouth County backyards that get real use, sod is the better fit: it stays cooler underfoot, soaks up rain, and handles kids, dogs, and summer heat well. Artificial turf skips mowing but still needs cleaning and brushing. To compare cost, get a written per square foot price for each on the same measured area.
How they compare
Cost. Sod is priced per square foot installed, at our standard rate of $2.85 with a $2,000 minimum, and that includes removing the old lawn and laying composted topsoil. Turf is a different build, usually a dug out and compacted stone base plus the turf itself, so ask any turf installer for a written per square foot price that includes the base and compare the two side by side.
Heat. Artificial turf can get very hot in direct summer sun. Living grass stays cooler, which matters for a play area or a dog run.
Upkeep. Sod needs mowing, feeding, and water. Turf needs no mowing but still needs rinsing, cleaning after pets, and brushing to keep the fibers standing up.
Drainage. Grass soaks up rain. Turf drains through its base, so the base has to be built right for the yard.
Lifespan. A healthy lawn keeps renewing itself with care. Turf wears out over time and eventually has to be replaced.
Big lot option. Some owners use sod for the large open areas and keep any turf to a small, hard to grow spot.

Common questions
Is artificial turf cheaper than sod on a big yard?
Get written per square foot quotes for both on the same measured area and compare. Our sod is $2.85 per square foot installed with a $2,000 minimum, including old lawn removal and composted topsoil. Make sure any turf quote includes the stone base.
Which is better for kids and dogs?
Real grass stays cooler in summer sun and absorbs rain. Turf needs regular cleaning where pets go.
Does sod need more upkeep than turf?
Yes, sod needs mowing, feeding, and water. A sprinkler system makes that easy. Our irrigation installs carry a 2 year parts and labor warranty, and we offer a $449 per year irrigation plan.
