We get asked to seed lawns every week, and every week we say no. Not because seeding can't work — because we've watched what it takes to make it work in Monmouth County, and we wouldn't sell that experience to a friend.
What seed really asks of you
The bag makes it look simple. The reality on a Monmouth property:
- A season of ugly. Bare dirt for weeks, patchy fuzz for months, and a lawn you can't walk on for most of a year.
- Two windows a year. Seed only establishes reliably in early fall (and, distant second, early spring). Miss the window, wait six months.
- Weeds get a head start. Every day seed spends germinating, crabgrass is racing it — and usually winning the open ground.
- Washouts. One good shore thunderstorm relocates your seed into the street. We've seen whole yards re-seeded three times.
- The real cost creeps. Seed, starter fertilizer, straw, water for months, re-seeding the failures, a year of patience — the "cheap" option quietly stops being cheap.
What sod is
Sod is that same tall fescue — except a farm already did the hard year. Our grass grows for about nine months on the farm before it's cut, which is precisely the ugly, fragile, weed-fighting phase you're skipping. It arrives as dense, mature turf; we install it over properly rebuilt soil; you're walking on it in two weeks and it's fully rooted in about a month.
- Instant result. Dirt at 8 AM, finished lawn by dinner.
- Any time in the season. March through early December — no germination window to gamble on.
- No washouts, no bird buffet, no weed race. The turf is already a sealed surface.
The honest verdict
If your budget genuinely can't reach sod this year, seed in mid-September, follow the watering religiously, and accept the year of patience — that's the fair advice.
