Fall is the quiet champion
Tall fescue — the grass we grow and install — is a cool-season variety. It does its serious root-building when soil is warm but air is cool, which in Monmouth County means September through early November. Install in fall and you get:
- Warm soil, cool air. Roots drive down aggressively while the blades aren't fighting heat stress.
- Two growing windows before summer. A September lawn gets fall AND spring to establish before its first July test.
- Less watering. Cooler air means the establishment schedule takes far less water than a June install.
- Fewer weeds. Crabgrass and its friends have already quit for the year. Your new lawn establishes with no competition.
Spring is a good second place
April and May installs work well — soil is warming, rain is frequent, and the lawn looks spectacular by June. The only trade-off: the root system is younger when the first heat wave hits, so summer watering discipline matters more.
Summer? Possible, with honesty
We install all season, and sod is actually the ONLY realistic way to start a lawn in summer — seed simply dies. But a July install in Marlboro or Howell means committing to the full watering schedule without excuses. If you can water, it works. If you travel every weekend, wait for September.
Winter is the one hard no
Once the ground freezes, farms stop cutting and installs stop. The season generally runs March through early December. If you're reading this in January — perfect. The best installs are planned a season ahead, and the calendar fills fastest exactly when installing is smartest.
